Introduction

In today's society students are finding it harder and harder to focus more on their academics to pursure their goal of becoming a good student. There are many perspectives that come into play when one wants to become a good student. The factors include the biological perspective, learning perspective, cognitive perspective and social perspective.

The biological perspective is all the factors are taken into consideration that determine your biological health. The factors that are taken into consideration for the biological perspective are good sleep habits, good nutrition, lack of stress, and the rejection of drugs and alcohol.

Biological Perspective

1. How can sleep help one become a good student?

I never realized how much "lack of sleep" I got until I read the article, "Sleep Habits and Patterns of College Students: A Preliminary Study" by Walter C. Buboltz Jr. Students think that staying up studying all night will guarantee them a passing grade the next day when they try and perform an academic task. However they do not realize what they are doing to their bodiesand thir minds by depriving themselves from sleep. A lack of sleep does not go away on its own, nor can you catch up on sleep.

Based on the study by Walter C. Bublotz Jr., I concluded that his research indicates that student's are negatively affected by a lack of sleep. Students tend to have poor sleep habits due to staying up late studying or staying out late in general. According to Bublotz, "poor sleep qualities is linked to increase in tension, irritability, depression, confusion, and generally lower life satisfaction. (Buboltz, 2001. p. 131). The article decribes students who perform worse the next day after a lack of sleep the previous night.

I have found that Buboltz's conclusions on college students academic abilities do in fact coincide with sleeping habits. Poor sleeping habits have led me to be more irritable and feeling "behind" during the day. I also found that Buboltz's assumption that sleeping in on the weekend does not solve the problem, but adds to it. Sleeping in on the weekend does not increase your mood or motivation, but hinders your depression.

 2. How can stress effect how one is a good student?

There are many issues that people are concerned about that are relavant to the Introduction of Psychology. What I've learned from research is that biological aspects of stress can either be negative or positive. Stress is one of the tools nature gave us; flight or fight. According to my topic of "How to be a good student", stress has a negative effect on the students. According to (Weiten,2008) stress is defined as any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one's well-being and tax one's coping abilities.

Iv'e learned that stress comes i four different stages.Frustration, Conflict, Change, and Pressure are the four stages of stress. When students are stressed it's hard to accomplish things because stress is the factor that is in the way.College students area very vulnerable group to experience stress, the latter of which is related to a variety of outcomes, such as health and academic performance. (Negga, Applewhite, Livingston 2007).When students stress they try to have reinforcers to make it go away or get better. The process of how this would go iss the student will be stressed then it effects your brain activity, especially if drugs are involved your functioning would be messed up. It causes a memory block then later on it will if you are a student effect your learning abilities. The learning will decline and this is the negative effect stress have on students.

Stress is known to be in the eye of the beholder. What one student thinks is very stressful, another student might think that it's helpful and relaxing.(Farrell,2008). Stress can cause health and illness problems. Although it is a good motivator which might at times be a positive to stuents, but in return if there is no stress that is not good.

Learning Perspective

In order of becoming a excellent student. It requieres varies techniques such as, motivation, determination, concentration etc... But these learning skills is not easily obtain. Due to the fact that a portion of student have something callled ADD/ or ADHD. ADD is known as Attention Deficit Disorder in which people tend to get distracted from what's important.

Theres a 7.8 percent of U.S children between the age 4-17 that are currently diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). Specialist have realize that this is a complex symdrome on students. It's impair your cognitive system. In which was are the following:

  •  Organizing or Starting tasks
  • Attention and easily distracted
  • Fast in critical thinking skills
  • Retaining when needed and switching task
  • Use of short-term memory
  • Keeping the motivation of work

Social Psychology Perspective

Kaplan, Diane S. "The Influence of Parent's Self-feelings and Expectaitons on Childrens Academic

Performance."_The Journal of Educational Research._ Washington D.C. 94 no6 360-70. JIAg 2001.

Parents:

Parents have a major effect on the childs academic achievemets and their ability to be a good student. The parents self-esteem effects the child. If a parenthas low self-esteem than they are most likely not going to be interested in their childs education. They will be more focused on themselves instead of their child. The negetive feelings of these parents of cause negative feelings in their child and it will effect the abillty to be a good student. These parents are not interested in the academic participation and performance of their child.

On the other hand if a parents has high self-esteem will be more interested in their child. They want their children to be good students. These parents most likely finished school and would like ther child to do the same. These parents are involved in their childs life and incourage their children to do well in school.

Nelson. Micheal R. "Achievment Motivation in Adolesents: The role of the Peer Climate and Best Friends."

_The Journal of Experimental Education._ 76 no2. 170-89. Wint 008.

Friends:

There has been research done that shows how the effects of being respected in the classroom by classmates effects the students achievement motivation using M.L. Maehrs's theory of Personal Investment. This theory is that the meaning a learner creates for an activity determines whether time and energy will be invested in that activity(Maehr). Maehr identified three faucets of meaning: the idividuals's current personal goals, sense of self, and action possibilities in the classroom. These are proposed to be influenced by four antecendents of meaning: information available to the learner, characteristics of the teaching or learning situation, the learner's personal experiences, and the features of the broader sociocultural context(Achievement motivation in adolescents).

The research focused on peer climate and the best friend. This research showed that having a best friend or the group of friends you hangout with can effect your abilities to be a good student. If a students best friend or friends are not interested in thier own education than that student most likely feels the same way. They are going to be wanting to do the things their friends do, so If they don't do their home work and participate in class that student is not going to want to. On the other hand if a student hangs out with peers that want to be good students, the will most likely want to be a good student as well.

Cognitive Perspective

There are several aspects to becoming a good student. Some are a very complex system of learning such as how your brain encodes, stores and retrieves information. Others, like simply student cooperation with the professor or taking better notes are much more straight forward. But it seems that basis for all learning is the cognitive process of self-regulation via cognitive monitoring and adjusting thoughts and behaviors for any given individual.

The cognitive perspective is that personality is a person's mental organization, or a schema. A schema is described scientifically as, “an organized cluster of knowledge about a particular object or event abstracted from previous experience with the object or event.”(W. Weiten, 2008, p.213) Basically it means that we are the sum of all our parts, or how we internally interpret the world to ourselves is the basis for how we interpret the world as a whole. It would seem that knowing oneself is the basis for all learning. Cognitive processes and activities such as information processing, mental representations, predictions, and expectations are central to the cognitive interpretation of learning. In the context of learning the cognitive perspective is an especially important point for American students given all of the diverse perspectives inherent in our culture.

Regardless of all the variables one faces individually, there is a certain universal way our brain learns or forms a memory. There are three key processes in memory. They are encoding, storage and retrieval. A great analogy for this process is how a computer system works. Encoding would be entering the given information on the keyboard. Storage is your computer saving the information, and retrieval is being able to get the info again at a later date. However, when info is encoded onto a hardrive it remains unchanged. While the process of learning in this analogy is oversimplified, our memories are much more dynamic and are rough reconstructions rather than exact copies. (W. Weiten, 2008, p.205) The first aspect of learning, encoding is a very important part of the cognitive process of learning. This perspective to learning or being a better student refers to the internal processes that make up information processing habits of an individual.

Conclusion

In order for one to become a good student they need to put their biological perspective, learning perspective, cognitive perspective and social perspective into consideration. If one's academic goal is to become a good student they are not going to go out partying all night and then try to go to school and get their work done, because they are not only going to be running on a lack of sleep but they will also be very stressed out. Also in order to acomplish the goal of becoming a good student one is going to hang out with friends that also have the desire to become a good student. By putting all of the perspectives into consideration it is a good chance that the student will get to the goal that they want and will become a good student.
